Last Saturday I drove a couple of hundred Ks south, checking the waves along the way, drinking copious amounts of green tea and eating these little cocoa and date balls like a maniac. Along the way I met up with my mate Jed Done at Switchfoot Boardstore and grabbed a custom board I'd ordered, threw it in the back of the car, drank more tea, and went and sussed out where my clients who I hadn't met were getting hitched. It'd been a good morning!
People started slowly gathering from various pathways through the scrub. I looked for breaching whales to the horizon and sussed out if there were any little reef breaks down below. I noticed sweat being wiped from brows and I contemplated the longevity of my currently clean and dry short sleeve collared shirt (I gave myself little hope).
At about four O three PM, I found myself disappearing in the scrub again myself and following the lead of some cute little flower girls, and my dear client Carina, joined by her immediate family as she made her way towards the most awesome and massive wreath of flowers within which stood the honourable Heath awaiting his bride.
Everything leading up to this minute and point in time immediately become meaningless. Carina and Heath met eyes, then interlinked fingers and did the smartest thing two people as special as they are can do - they got hitched! We did all sweat and we all smiled and we all basked in the beautiful meaningfulness of it all as occasionally I still pondered breaching non existent whales for visual effect.
The sky tuned in to all the glory and gave a light show in the midst of downpours and refreshments that couldn't have been scripted better. Unless of course you forget to take into account the cutest little town hall ever, music and food to die for. Step in two people surrounded by adoring fans, friend, and family - one who prefers not to make shows of public affection, and the other apparently who can't dance. Then picture Carina and Heath, dancing and hugging and kissing the night away while the band bangs out live tunes with soul and the rest of the celebrity wrangle of humanity writhe and drink like dancing freaks of happiness.
It was a good Wedding!
